Whoever held Corinthia held the way into the Peloponnese. That is why the region is full of fortifications: from the vast Acrocorinth and the Hexamilion Wall down to dozens of small castles and towers guarding every critical mountain pass.
Most are neither restored nor equipped for visitors — they are ruins standing in open country, and that is exactly where their appeal lies.
