Agionori Castle

Castle

  • 21.0 km south of Corinth

straight-line distances

In southern Corinthia, above the village of Agionori, a medieval castle commands one of the mountain passes linking Corinthia with the Argolid. The position was no accident: whoever held this defile controlled the crossing.

What you will see

Stretches of wall and towers survive on the rocky hill. The castle is not restored and there is no formal access; what it offers is the sense of the position and the view over the gorge and surrounding mountains.

The wider area is historically charged — these mountain passes played a part in many conflicts across the centuries, down to the years of the Greek Revolution.

Practical notes

  • Reached from the village of Agionori, on foot uphill.
