Nemea is a name every wine lover in Greece knows. The town sits at the centre of the largest PDO wine zone in the country and makes the natural base for exploring a valley closed on every side by vineyards.
The wine
The grape that made Nemea famous is Agiorgitiko — red, velvety, its intensity shifting with the altitude of the vineyard. Dozens of wineries operate here, from small family cellars to large estates, and many welcome visitors for tours and tastings.
What else to see
A few kilometres away lies Ancient Nemea, with the Temple of Zeus, the stadium and its athletes tunnel, and the archaeological museum. The same valley also holds ancient Phlius and Kleonai.
History and character
Until 1923 the town was officially called Agios Georgios; that year it was renamed Nemea. Its wine was known as the «black wine of Agios Georgios», which gave the Agiorgitiko grape its name. The Nemea designation of origin zone was established in 1971.
The neighbouring village of Archaia Nemea was called Koutsomodi until 1958. The Archaeological Museum of Nemea, inside the archaeological site, opened in 1984.
