Xylokastro lies roughly halfway between Athens and Patras, where the Corinthian Gulf meets the mountains. Its trademark is Pefkias, a rare pine forest that reaches down to the shore — perfect for walks and summer shade. Behind the town, mountain villages such as Trikala and Riza, together with nearby Lake Doxa, offer year-round escapes.
History and character
The central square is dominated by the metropolitan church of Agios Vlasios, the town’s patron saint, with a tall octagonal dome, two bell towers and a marble iconostasis.
The port of ancient Pellene, Aristonautae, is placed on the coast of Xylokastro. The Pefkias pine forest, which separates the town from the beach, is at least 200 years old.
