Nemea is a name every wine lover in Greece knows. The town sits at the centre of the largest PDO wine zone in the country and makes the natural base for exploring a valley closed on every side by vineyards.

The wine

The grape that made Nemea famous is Agiorgitiko — red, velvety, its intensity shifting with the altitude of the vineyard. Dozens of wineries operate here, from small family cellars to large estates, and many welcome visitors for tours and tastings.

What else to see

A few kilometres away lies Ancient Nemea, with the Temple of Zeus, the stadium and its athletes tunnel, and the archaeological museum. The same valley also holds ancient Phlius and Kleonai.

Practical notes

• About 30 km from Corinth, easily reached from the motorway.
• Best time to visit: September, during the harvest.
• Book ahead at the wineries — most receive visitors by arrangement.
• If you plan to taste, arrange not to drive.
