In the enclosed mountain valley of Feneos, high up and far from the sea, stood one of the ancient cities of the Arcadian borderland. Ancient Feneos was known from written sources — Pausanias describes it — and excavation has confirmed the picture.

The Asklepieion

The most important find is the sanctuary dedicated to Asklepios, a healing centre serving the mountain region. Architectural remains and sculpture have come to light, part of which is displayed in the local archaeological museum.

The landscape

The valley is closed, with no natural outflow; the water disappears into sinkholes. This geological fact shaped the history of the place, with flooding and water-control works attempted since antiquity.
