In the mountainous north-western corner of Corinthia, around Lake Stymphalia, stands one of the most atmospheric ancient cities in the region. The landscape here has nothing in common with coastal Corinthia: altitude, mountains, wetland and quiet.
The myth
Stymphalia is the setting of the sixth labour of Heracles. Here, the story goes, nested the Stymphalian Birds, creatures with metallic feathers that ravaged the countryside; Heracles startled them into the air with bronze rattles and destroyed them.
What you will see
The site preserves stretches of the city walls, the acropolis, the theatre and the remains of the temple of Artemis Stymphalia. The wetland itself is now a protected area with notable birdlife, while close by stand the medieval monastery of Zaraka and the Environment Museum of Stymphalia.
