Ziria — known in antiquity as Kyllini — is the second highest mountain in the Peloponnese, its summit rising above 2,370 metres. It dominates the whole of upland Corinthia and is the reason the region is far more than a coastline.

The myth

In mythology Hermes was born on Mount Kyllini. The mountain was sacred to the god, and its name is bound up with the ancient sanctuaries of the area.

What to do

• The Ziria ski centre in winter, with runs cut through fir forest.
• Hiking to the summit and across the high plateaus in spring and autumn.
• Lake Doxa on the western foothills — among the finest landscapes in the Peloponnese.
• The mountain villages: Trikala, Goura, Karya.

Practical notes

• Access bases: Trikala Korinthias and Goura.
• Snow chains are needed in winter; mountain weather changes abruptly.
• Climbing to the summit calls for experience and proper equipment.
