Monastery of Osios Patapios, Loutraki

Set on the foothills of the Geraneia mountains, at 380 metres and about 8 km north of Loutraki, the Monastery of Osios Patapios is one of Greece’s most important pilgrimage sites — with a view that sweeps across the Corinthian Gulf.

History

The convent was founded in 1952 around a cave-hermitage used since at least the 14th century. In 1904, Loutraki locals digging out the cave came upon the incorrupt, fragrant relic of Saint Patapios; the skull of Saint Ypomoni is also kept here.

Visiting

Around 40 nuns care for the site and welcome pilgrims. The monastery is open in the morning until six in the evening. The climb rewards you with the sacred cave, the wall paintings and an unforgettable view.
