A little Greek

Visitors who try two or three words of Greek always get a smile back. You do not need to be good at it — you only need to try.

The basics

• Γεια σας — yah sas — hello (polite)
• Καλημέρα — kali-MEH-ra — good morning
• Ευχαριστώ — ef-hari-STO — thank you
• Παρακαλώ — para-ka-LO — please / you’re welcome
• Ναι / Όχι — neh / OH-hee — yes / no. (Careful: neh means yes, not no.)

At the table

• Ένα νερό, παρακαλώ — EH-na neh-RO — a water, please
• Τον λογαριασμό, παρακαλώ — ton logaria-SMO — the bill, please
• Πολύ ωραίο! — po-LEE o-REH-o — very good!
• Στην υγειά μας — stin yah mas — cheers

Out and about

• Πού είναι…; — POO EE-neh — where is…?
• Πόσο κάνει; — PO-so KA-nee — how much is it?
• Δεν καταλαβαίνω — then kata-la-VEH-no — I don’t understand
• Μιλάτε αγγλικά; — mi-LA-teh ang-li-KA — do you speak English?
