📍 Check in with Corinthia Pass

Facing Acrocorinth across a steep rocky hill stands a small castle that most people see without knowing what it is. Penteskoufi is Frankish, and it exists for one reason only: Acrocorinth.

The history

In the early 13th century, when the Franks were besieging Acrocorinth and failing to take it, they built this fort opposite in order to watch the defenders and cut off their supplies. It was, quite literally, a castle built to stare down another castle.

What you will see

Stretches of wall and a cistern survive. The real reward, though, is the view: from here Acrocorinth rises opposite you at full scale, with the plain of Corinth and the sea beyond.

Practical notes

  • Access is by a short but steep walk — not suitable for small children or for the midday heat.
  • There are no facilities, lighting or railings; take care on the rocks.
  • Best in late afternoon, with the sun falling across Acrocorinth.
