Velo is one of the most productive corners of Corinthia. It lies on the plain between Kiato and Nerantza, in a belt that lives off the land.
The land and its produce
The area is known for its vineyards and for currants — the Corinthian currant gave the region international fame for centuries and travelled the world carrying the name of the place itself. Alongside grow citrus, olives and vegetables.
What you will find
Velo is not a tourist destination, and that is exactly where its interest lies: a market, bakeries, traditional cafes and the everyday life of a Greek farming town. The sea is a few minutes away.
History and character
The earliest known record of the name Velo is in the Venetian census of 1700.
In 1814 an estate of 12,000 stremmata was sold by its Ottoman owners to people from Velo. From 1998 to 2010 Velo was the seat of the Municipality of Velo-Neratza, and today it belongs to the Municipality of Velo-Vocha. It is surrounded by vineyards, citrus groves and apricot orchards.
