Lechaio lies on the Corinthian Gulf coast, a few kilometres west of Corinth. The modern village is built beside the ancient western harbour of Corinth, one of the two that made the city rich.
What you will see
The outlines of the ancient harbour basins are still visible, while the most striking monument is the enormous Early Christian basilica of the 5th century — among the largest churches ever built in the Byzantine world.
The beach is long and quiet, looking out over the gulf to the mountains of central Greece.
History and character
Until 1925 the village was called Kolompotsi. It was then renamed Lechaio, after the ancient port of Corinth that lies a little further east.
The area was marshy and almost uninhabited when its land was granted to the Zaimis family as a reward for their services in the War of Independence. In 1860 the Zaimis family brought the first settlers from Vounaki and Rachova, near Kalavryta, to farm it. From 1912 the village belonged to Perigiali, and it became a separate community in 1946.
