Agios Vasileios lies 20 km south-west of Corinth, roughly 18.3 km from Vrachati.

What to expect

A village of about 1,000 residents on the old Corinth–Argos national road. North of the village stand the remains of a 13th-century Frankish castle, which also preserves traces of Mycenaean fortification, while to the west lies the prehistoric hill of Zygouries, excavated by the American archaeologist Blegen. Ancient Kleonai with its Temple of Heracles is a few kilometres away, and the nearby Dervenakia pass was the scene of the 1822 battle in which Dramali’s army was destroyed.

History and character

The Roman Hadrianic aqueduct, which carried water from Stymphalia to Corinth, passed through Agios Vasileios. Traces of it can still be seen south of the village and within it.

To the north-west lies the hill of Ancient Kleonai, inhabited since Homeric times. Homer calls Kleonai “well-built”, and its walls still survive.
