Trikala Corinthias: Mountain Tourism, Skiing and Nature in the Heart of the Peloponnese

At 850 m altitude in the Ziria mountain range, Trikala Corinthias is one of the most attractive mountain villages in the Peloponnese. A dense fir forest surrounds it, stone-built houses line its narrow streets, and in winter it transforms into a small but real ski destination. In summer the hiking trails and cool temperatures make it a perfect retreat from the coastal heat.

The Village

Trikala Corinthias — not to be confused with the city of Trikala in Thessaly — sits at roughly 700 m altitude in the foothills of the Ziria massif, 50 km south of Corinth city. The village is built from local stone in the traditional mountain style and has retained more of its original character than many Peloponnesian settlements. The central square, with its plane tree and kafeneio serving coffee to retired men regardless of the season, functions exactly as it always has.

Several of the older houses on the main street have been converted into guesthouses or agrotourism units — stone exteriors, wooden interiors, fireplaces in the main rooms. In winter, these fill with Athenians who combine a weekend in the mountains with skiing and walking. In summer, they offer a cooler alternative to the coast: temperatures at Trikala are consistently 8–10°C below coastal Corinthia during the day, and the nights are cold enough for a blanket throughout the season.

Skiing at Ziria

The ski centre on the Ziria slopes above Trikala operates when snow conditions allow, typically January through mid-February in average years and sometimes into March in good winters. There are runs of varying difficulty including one of the longer beginner slopes in Peloponnesian skiing. Rental equipment is available on-site. The centre is modest compared to major alpine resorts, but the view from the upper slopes — down through the fir forest toward the Gulf of Corinth visible in the distance — is genuinely surprising and specific to this location.

Lift passes are inexpensive relative to other Greek ski resorts. The centre’s main limitation is weather-dependence: Ziria gets less reliable snowfall than the higher massifs of northern Greece, and seasons can be short. Check conditions before driving up in January or February — local guesthouses usually have current information. When the centre is open, the access road is cleared; equipment chains are advisable but not always required.

Hiking

The Ziria massif reaches 2,374 m at its highest peak and offers serious mountain walking from late spring through early autumn. The main summit trail (marked) starts near the ski centre and takes 5–6 hours return. Shorter trails connect Trikala with the surrounding villages through forest and alpine meadow. The E4 European long-distance path passes through the area.

The beech and fir forest immediately above Trikala is accessible on shorter walks of 1–2 hours, suitable for non-serious hikers. Spring wildflowers are exceptional from late April through June: the forest floor and the open meadows are carpeted in species rarely seen at lower altitudes. Autumn colour in October is also notable — the deciduous understorey turns above the dark fir canopy in a way that reads distinctly northern European in character.

Practical Info

Trikala Corinthias is 50 km from Corinth city via the Nemea valley road. There’s no public transport from the coast; a car is essential. The village has several guesthouses (book ahead for winter weekends), a small supermarket and two or three year-round restaurants. Mobile signal is variable on the upper slopes. The road from the village to the ski centre is surfaced but steep — check conditions in winter. For accommodation, contact guesthouses directly by phone; most don’t use online booking platforms.
