Lake Doxa: The Hidden Gem of Corinthia’s Mountains

At 900 m altitude in the Ziria mountain range, Lake Doxa is one of the most beautiful artificial lakes in Greece. Created in 1997 by damming the Doxa river, it is surrounded by dense fir forests and fed by snowmelt from the peaks above. The stone bridge at the lake’s edge has become one of Corinthia’s most photographed spots.
Getting There
Lake Doxa is in the mountains of Corinthia at roughly 900 m altitude, about 70 km from Corinth city and 40 km from Kiato. The road from Kiato through Feneos village is the most direct and best-maintained route. Allow 1–1.5 hours from the coast; the final stretch climbs steeply through mixed forest. A regular car handles the road without difficulty in dry conditions; after snowfall (November–March), check conditions before driving. There is no public transport to the lake.
The lake itself was created by a hydroelectric dam completed in the 1990s, flooding the valley of the ancient site of Pheneos. At certain water levels, the foundations of old farmhouses are visible just below the surface — a reminder of what the reservoir replaced.
What to Do
The perimeter path around the lake covers approximately 10 km and is easily walked in three to four hours without stopping. The terrain is gentle — the path follows the shoreline closely and has no significant elevation changes. A stone bridge spans the inlet at the northern end of the lake, and walking across it gives a different perspective over the water and the enclosing mountains. The trail is unshaded for stretches; start early in summer.
Swimming in the lake is possible and popular in summer. The water is cold relative to the coast — Doxa is a mountain reservoir, and the temperature rarely exceeds 20°C even in August. The northern coves are cleaner and less visited. Bring food and water; there are no facilities at the lake itself beyond a basic car park area at the main access point.
In winter, the lake can be reached when the road is clear, and the atmosphere is entirely different: fir-covered mountains rising above still dark water, no other visitors, genuine silence. If the ski centre at Trikala (25 km by mountain road) is operating, combining a morning ski session with an afternoon at Lake Doxa is possible and worth the driving.
The Village of Feneos
Feneos village sits in the valley below the lake and is worth a stop in either direction. The central square has a kafeneio and a small taverna serving local food — mountain lamb, beans, seasonal vegetables, wine from the Feneos cooperative. The village church dates from the Byzantine period; the surrounding valley floor was once the bed of the ancient Lake Stymphalos system before drainage projects altered the hydrology of the entire region.
Several farmhouses and guesthouses in Feneos and the surrounding area offer accommodation — simple, reasonably priced, with local breakfast included. Staying overnight and walking the lake at dawn before the day visitors arrive is a different experience from a day trip and worth considering if your schedule allows it.
Combining With Stymphalos
Lake Stymphalos — a Natura 2000 wetland 20 km southeast of Doxa — can be combined in a single mountain day. Drive from the coast to Feneos, walk part of the Doxa perimeter, drive to Stymphalos for birdwatching or a walk along the wetland trail, then return via Nemea for a late afternoon winery visit. It’s a full day, covers three distinct ecosystems, and barely touches a tourist in any direction.
