Ziria is not a village but the mountain massif of ancient Kyllini, in western Corinthia: the second highest mountain in the Peloponnese, with its summit at 2,376 metres. The point on this page lies on its high plateaus, 44 km west of Corinth and about 19 km from Derveni.

What to expect

The Flambouritsa valley, a Natura 2000 protected area, divides the mountain into Greater and Lesser Ziria (2,117 m). The Sythas river rises here before reaching the sea at Xylokastro, and rare species such as the golden eagle find refuge in the valley. At 1,600 metres, from autumn to spring, Lake Dasios forms, one of the highest lakes in Greece, where the mountain’s free-roaming horses come to cool off in summer. On the eastern side, at 1,750 metres, is the Cave of Hermes, where myth says the god was born.

In winter

At 1,500 metres the small Ziria ski centre operates, with a chalet, equipment hire and two runs. The road climbs from Xylokastro via Trikala.
