straight-line distances
Karya is one of the mountain villages of northern Corinthia, in the hinterland above Xylokastro. It belongs to that line of settlements built high up, away from the coast, where there was water and timber.
Its character
Plane trees on the square, running fountains, stone houses and a climate noticeably cooler than the shore. It is one of those villages that come alive in August, when the families who come from here return.
What to do
- Walk the paths and fir forests around the settlement.
- Eat at a taverna serving local mountain produce.
- Head on to the neighbouring mountain villages and to Ziria.
Practical notes
- Reached from Xylokastro, an uphill drive of about 30 km.
- The road is winding; allow extra time.
- An ideal summer escape from the heat of the coast.
