Isthmia lies where the Corinth Canal meets the Saronic Gulf. It is a seaside village with an unusual daily spectacle: the submersible bridge.
The bridge that sinks
At the eastern entrance to the Canal the bridge does not lift — it descends into the water so that ships can pass over it. Standing beside it and watching it go under is one of the strangest and best-loved experiences in the area.
What else
Right next door is the archaeological site of Isthmia, with the Sanctuary of Poseidon and its museum, while a little further south lie Kechreai and the submerged remains of the ancient harbour.
