Lake Vouliagmeni lies on the Perachora peninsula, at the north-eastern edge of Corinthia, a few kilometres outside Loutraki. It is a brackish lagoon connected to the Gulf of Corinth by a narrow channel, and it is considered one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the region.
The setting
Pine-covered hills come down almost to the water’s edge. Because the lake meets the sea only through that narrow channel, its water stays calm and warm even when the Gulf is choppy — which makes it a favourite spot for swimming, kayaking and SUP, especially with children.
What to see around the lake
- Heraion of Perachora: the ancient sanctuary of Hera, set in one of the most striking coves in Greece, a few minutes’ drive from the lake.
- Melagavi Lighthouse: at the tip of the peninsula, looking out over the Gulf of Corinth and the Alkyonides islands — one of the best sunset spots in the area.
- Waterside tavernas: small fish tavernas right on the water, serving fresh catch with a view over the lake.
- Walking trails: paths through the pines linking the lake with the Heraion and the lighthouse.
Getting there
The lake is about 15 kilometres from Loutraki along the coastal road towards Perachora. From Athens the drive takes roughly an hour and a half. The final stretch is narrow and winding, but paved throughout.
Good to know
There is no fully organised beach with sunbeds along the shore — most visitors lay a towel on the pebbles or swim from the tavernas’ platforms. Summer weekends get busy, so come on a weekday or early in the morning if you want it quiet.
