Trikala is the best-known mountain destination in Corinthia. Built on the slopes of Ziria (Kyllini) at over 1,000 metres, it is divided into three hamlets — Upper, Middle and Lower — each with its own character.
What you will find
Stone houses, squares shaded by plane trees, guesthouses and tavernas serving mountain cooking. It is a classic winter destination for Athenians, but equally a summer refuge from the heat — the temperature difference from the coast is striking.
Around it
- The Ziria ski centre and trails through the fir forests.
- The Forest Village and the routes towards the summit.
- Lake Doxa and the Feneos valley, a little further west.
History and character
Lower Trikala has the church of Agios Dimitrios, built in 1697 and known for its wall paintings. Beyond Upper Trikala, the road leads to the Monastery of Agios Vlasios, built around 1400, with views over the Sythas valley and the villages of Manna, Stylia and Panariti opposite.
The upper quarter has officially been called Ano Trikala since 1977; until then it was the «Upper Quarter of Trikala».
Practical notes
- About 45 km from Xylokastro, 75 km from Corinth.
- Snow chains may be needed in winter — check the forecast.
- Book accommodation early for winter weekends.
