Kryoneri lies in the mountainous hinterland of Sikyonia, above Kiato. Its name says it plainly: the area is known for its cold running waters.
The observatory
The Kryoneri Observatory operates here, taking advantage of clear skies and altitude. It is one of those things that give mountain Corinthia a character nobody expects.
The village
A quiet settlement with a square, fountains and views down the valley. It makes a good stop on a route climbing from the coast up into the mountain villages.
History and character
Until 1955 the village was called Matzani; that year it was renamed Kryoneri.
The Kryoneri Observatory belongs to the National Observatory of Athens and was founded in 1972, at about 900 metres. Its 1.2-metre telescope is used in the NELIOTA research programme, which records small asteroids and meteoroids striking the surface of the Moon.
Practical notes
- About 30 km from Kiato.
- The road is winding; allow time.
- For the observatory, check whether public observing evenings are scheduled.
