Chiliomodi is a farming town in southern Corinthia, on the road towards the Argolid. In recent years its name has become linked with a major archaeological development: the uncovering of ancient Tenea.
Ancient Tenea
The city that tradition connected with captives from Tenedos after the Trojan War was known from written sources, but its location stayed unclear. Excavations around Chiliomodi have brought to light houses, baths, streets and a cemetery with rich finds.
The town
Everyday life in a farming town: a square, cafes, a market. It makes a practical stop for anyone heading towards Nemea or Argos.
History and character
Chiliomodi is the seat of the Tenea municipal unit, which also includes Agionori, Agios Vasileios, Klenia, Koutalas, Mapsos, Spathovouni and Stefani. It lies on the Corinth–Argos road, on the pass that has linked Argos and Corinth since antiquity.
According to tradition, the village got its name when its first inhabitants produced and sold a thousand “modia” (bushels) of wheat in a single year. For the ancient city of the area, see our article on Ancient Tenea.
