straight-line distances
Above Trikala Korinthias, on the slopes of Ziria, stand the ruins of a fortified site that locals simply call the Paliokastro, the old castle.
The position
As with most mountain castles in the Peloponnese, the choice of site comes down to controlling the passes: from here you command the route climbing from the coast into the mountain interior.
What you will see
Sections of wall and foundations among the vegetation. The castle is neither restored nor laid out for visitors; the reward is the view over the valley and mountains, and the feel of the place.
Practical notes
- Reached from Trikala on an uphill walk.
- No signage — ask in the village for the path.
- Wear proper shoes; avoid it after rain.
