Loutraki and the Geraneia Mountains: A Timeless Destination

Most visitors to Loutraki come for the sea and the famous spring water. Fewer venture into the Geraneia mountains that rise immediately behind the town — a dramatic limestone massif with caves, gorges, pine forests and views over both the Corinthian Gulf and the Saronic Sea. Together, the coast and the mountains make Loutraki one of Corinthia’s most varied destinations.
Loutraki Town
Loutraki is a proper Greek resort town — busy in July and August, pleasantly relaxed the rest of the year. The long seafront promenade is ideal for evening walks: ice cream shops, cafés and tavernas run the length of the waterfront. The thermal spa (Loutraki Hydrotherapy Centre) offers treatments using the famous mineral-rich spring water. The casino — the largest in the Balkans — draws visitors year-round and keeps the town economically alive even in January.
The spring water itself is worth tasting at source. Loutraki mineral water is sold throughout Greece, but drinking it fresh from the fountain near the old spa building is a different experience — cold, slightly sulphurous, and surprisingly good. The water was used for therapeutic bathing in antiquity and became famous internationally in the late 19th century.
The Geraneia Mountains
Immediately behind Loutraki, the Geraneia massif rises to over 1,300 m. Several hiking trails climb through pine and oak forests to ridges with panoramic views over both the Corinthian Gulf to the north and the Saronic Gulf to the east. The most accessible route starts from the village of Perachora (15 km from Loutraki) and climbs to the mountain plateau. The area is part of a Natura 2000 protected zone.
The most dramatic feature of the Geraneia is its sheer limestone cliffs facing the sea — visible from the coastal road and impressive from the water. Several gorges cut through the massif; the most accessible is the ravine above the village of Psatha on the Saronic side, though reaching it requires a separate day trip from Athens rather than from Loutraki itself.
Perachora and the Heraion
At the end of the coastal road from Loutraki, the Heraion of Perachora sits on a rocky promontory above the turquoise Vouliagmeni lagoon. The ancient sanctuary of Hera dates to the 9th century BC — among the oldest known in Greece. Excavations from 1930 onwards uncovered thousands of votive offerings, now in Athens and Corinth museums.
Swimming in the lagoon below the ruins is one of the most memorable experiences in the Peloponnese. The water is brackish, clear to several metres depth, and warm in summer — fish are visible from the surface. A small seasonal café operates at the harbour. No shade at the site itself: bring a hat and water if you visit between June and September.
The Beaches
Loutraki’s main beach extends for over 3 km along the northern edge of town — sandy, calm and sheltered from open-sea swell. Kalamia beach, south of town, is pebbly but cleaner and backed by a small park. The coves between Loutraki and Perachora are largely undeveloped and accessible by car on a rough coastal road: excellent for those willing to walk a few minutes from wherever they park.
Practical Information
Loutraki is 80 km from Athens by the E94 highway — about 75 minutes’ drive. Buses run from Athens Kifissos terminal roughly every hour; journey time is 90 minutes. From Corinth, Loutraki is 20 minutes by car or by the local bus. Most facilities operate year-round, with peak activity June–September. Hotel prices in the off-season can be very reasonable.
