Sykia

Sykia lies 27.6 km north-west of Corinth, roughly 2.5 km from Xylokastro.

What to expect

A seaside settlement just before Xylokastro, between it and Kiato. The poet Kostas Karyotakis spent summers here, and Angelos Sikelianos and Eva Palmer also kept a summer house. Worth seeing are the church of the Panagia (1842), which holds its feast on 15 August, the stone church of Agia Varvara in the pine wood and the Zouzoulas Mansion.

History and character

Sykia, also called Sykea, has two churches: the Church of the Virgin, founded in 1842 on the site of an older church, and the Church of Agia Varvara, a stone basilica in the pine forest, built in 1966 at the expense of a nephew of the poet Kostas Karyotakis.

Sykia is the family home of the academics and writers Theofanis Kakridis and his son Ioannis Kakridis, and of the journalist and poet Sofoklis Karydis. Karyotakis, though not from the village, spent many summers here, where his grandfather and later his siblings lived.
