Sofiko is one of the largest villages in south-eastern Corinthia and the centre of an area quite unlike the rest: here the pine forest dominates, the terrain is mountainous, and the sea lies just below on the Saronic side.
Its character
This is a village with a tradition of stock-raising and resin, with a broad square and a life that does not depend on tourism. Above the settlement stand the ruins of the medieval castle of Sofiko.
What is around
- Korfos: a picturesque bay with tavernas and clear water, a few kilometres south.
- Forest tracks and paths through the pine woods.
- The beaches of the eastern coast, from Almyri to Katakali.
History and character
Sofiko was built on its present site in the 14th century, but the area was inhabited long before. Until 2010 it was the seat of the Municipality of Solygeia, and today it belongs to the Municipality of Corinth.
The name of the old municipality recalls ancient Solygeia, on the hill of the same name, where remains of buildings from around 1400 BC have been found. Thucydides describes the battle fought here in 425 BC, when the Athenian general Nicias landed on the Corinthian coast; in the end the Athenians re-embarked and sailed away.
Practical notes
- About 30 km from Corinth.
- The roads are winding; allow extra time.
- A good base for exploring the little-known southern part of Corinthia.
