Kamari

Kamari lies 36 km north-west of Corinth, roughly 6 km from Xylokastro.

What to expect

A seaside village on the southern shore of the Gulf of Corinth, about 5 kilometres west of Xylokastro. Together with Kariotika it forms the Kamari community, with 852 residents at the 2021 census. The village already appears in the accounts of early 19th-century foreign travellers.

History and character

Kamari, also called Kamario, appears in the accounts of foreign travellers of the early 19th century: the Frenchman Pouqueville records it as Camari, and the Englishman William Leake mentions the “Khan of Kamares”.

After liberation, in 1834, it was attached to the Municipality of Aigeira, and in 1912 it became the seat of its own community. Today, together with Kariotika, it forms the community of Kamari in the Municipality of Xylokastro-Evrostini.
