Goura lies in mountain Corinthia, at the foot of Ziria (Kyllini), the second highest mountain in the Peloponnese. It is one of those villages that completely overturn the usual picture of the region.
What is around
- Lake Doxa: the reservoir with its little church on the peninsula, among the most photographed landscapes in the Peloponnese.
- The Ziria ski centre and fir forests for hiking.
- The Feneos valley with its archaeological site and museum.
The village
Goura works as the local centre of the area, with a square, tavernas and places to stay. In winter it fills with visitors to the mountain, while in summer it offers cool air when the coast is baking.
History and character
Goura’s square is dominated by the stone church of the Taxiarches, dating from 1888, surrounded by 19th-century mansions.
In 1834 it was decided to rename the village Kyllini, but the change was never applied. In his three-volume work on the folklore of the Feneos municipality, Vasileios Sarlis records in detail Goura’s «Carnival Wedding» as it was held in the 1950s.
Practical notes
