visitcorinthia.comFeneos

Feneos gives its name to an entire mountain valley in western Corinthia — one of the most striking landscapes in the Peloponnese and utterly unlike the rest of the region.
What is here
- Lake Doxa: the reservoir with the chapel of Agios Fanourios on its peninsula.
- Ancient Feneos and the archaeological museum holding the finds from the Asklepieion.
- The sinkhole of Feneos, which swallows the water of the plateau.
- Fir forests and paths towards Ziria and Dourdouvana.
Its character
Mountain villages, stock-raising, cool summers and snow in winter. The valley is closed, with no natural outflow to the sea — hence the sinkholes.
History and character
The village of Feneos was called Sivista until 1927, and Archaia Feneos was called Kalyvia until 1977. Excavations in 1958–1961 on the acropolis of ancient Feneos uncovered a temple of Asclepius, identified by its inscriptions.
Above Lake Doxa stands the Monastery of Agios Georgios of Feneos. It was founded in the 14th century and, according to the inscription at its entrance, rebuilt on its present site in 1693 after a great flood in the valley. It was restored in 1754 after a fire, and its gilded iconostasis dates from 1762.
Practical notes
- About 80 km from Corinth; reached from Xylokastro or Kiato.
- Check weather and road conditions in winter.
