Examilia

Examilia

Examilia lies a few kilometres south of Corinth. Its name is associated with the Hexamilion Wall, the great Byzantine fortification that sealed the Isthmus.

Its character

A farming settlement of the Corinthian plain, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and citrus. It is one of the villages that serve Corinth daily and live to its rhythm.

What is around

Acrocorinth and Ancient Corinth are very close, as is the eastern coast at Kechreai.

History and character

The Examilia area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and in the Roman period there was an important quarry here. The name appears in Byzantine times and is linked to the “six miles” of the Isthmus.

Before 1821 Kiamil Bey, one of the richest Ottomans in the Peloponnese, had a country estate here. After liberation, on part of his land, the American doctor and philhellene Samuel Gridley Howe founded the farming settlement of “Washingtonia” to house refugees. No trace of that settlement survives.
