Evrostina (Zacholi)

Evrostina (Zacholi)

Evrostina — known to most people by its older name, Zacholi — is one of the historic mountain villages of northern Corinthia. It is built in an amphitheatre setting looking out over the Corinthian Gulf.

Its character

Stone houses, old churches and the feel of a village that once knew real prosperity. The area is known for its waters, and for the streams and waterfalls that run down towards the coast.

What is around

History and character

The village spreads across the Zacholi plateau at about 750 metres, inside a forest of black pine. Above it rise Mavrioros (1,750 m) and Mount Evrostini.

At the entrance to the village stands the church of Agios Georgios, built in 1811. Around 1860–1865, people from Zacholi moved down to the coast and founded Derveni. The Zacholitikos or Dervenios river rises near Sarantapicho, crosses the area and reaches the sea at the eastern end of Derveni.
