Agionori is a small village in southern Corinthia, built below its medieval castle. Its position on a mountain pass towards the Argolid gave it a historical weight out of proportion to its size.
The history
The defiles of this area were used repeatedly in military operations, from medieval times down to the Revolution of 1821 — Dervenakia lies in the same mountain zone.
The castle of Agionori dates from between 1377 and 1450, in the period of Frankish rule, and was built on the ruins of an older Byzantine fort. It covers about 850 square metres.
During the War of Independence the castle served as headquarters for Dimitrios Ypsilantis and Papaflessas at the time of Dramalis’s campaign in 1822.
What you will see
